New Items of Business Added as Discussion Sessions Begin
On June 17 General Council 44 will reconvene with an opening session at 12 p.m. EDT. After that session, observable by registered visitors on PheedLoop and on YouTube, the Commissioners and Corresponding Members will go into closed discussion groups to engage with the proposals for June 17, 18, and 19. The end of Discussion Sessions wrap-up will begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT on June 19 and will again be open to the public.
After the Discussion Sessions, a Facilitation Team will prepare a Way Forward based on the advice from discussion groups. This Way Forward, anticipated by June 30, will recommend what proposals will be addressed in the Decision Sessions of July 21‒25.
A few new items of business are being added to the GC44 agenda. Some of these items were expected business: the Nominations Committee report, the Financial Statements and Audit Committee report, the United Property Resource Corporation report, and the various regional council reports.
Another proposal, GS14 Challenging Anti-Semitism in The United Church of Canada is another new item of business that the Business Committee is adding to the agenda. This proposal invites the church to develop an education program that will result in deepened learning and action on antisemitism in line with the church’s prior commitment: Bearing Faithful Witness (2003). To give further context to this proposal and other proposals related to Palestine and Israel, a Frequently Asked Questions document has been prepared and attached under downloads below.
Moderator nominations remain open until 2 p.m. on June 17, after which they will be closed. The election for Moderator, regardless of the number of nominations, will be held on July 23 within the Decision Sessions.
